Thermal Management:
Selecting the Right Technology

Need efficient heat transfer from high power or high heat flux devices or systems — but don’t have much space to work with? Offering flexible and space-saving design, no moving parts, proven reliability and high performance under extreme conditions, Aavid Thermacore passive and active thermal management solutions efficiently spread, move and disperse heat.

heat pipe for thermal management

For specialized applications with concentrated heat sources, such as computer server microprocessors, power electronics (IGBT’s, SCR’s) or radar transmit/receive modules, heat spreading via advanced thermal conduction or passive two-phase heat pipe technology may be the answer. Advanced thermal conduction technology takes heat generated by electronic components and spreads it through using a high conductivity annealed pyrolytic graphite (APG) encapsulated in materials like copper, aluminum or CTE matched metal. Passive two-phase heat pipe technology moves heat with a high effective thermal conductivity through the evaporation and condensation of a working fluid contained within a metal vacuum vessel.

Dissipating high heat loads within enclosure cabinets may be a job for Aavid Thermacore's heat exchanger technology. Heat exchangers essentially “trade” heat from within a cabinet enclosure for cooler temperatures created by ambient air outside (e.g., outside an electronics cabinet). Aavid Thermacore’s compact, high-efficiency heat exchangers are suited to the aggressive thermal management requirements of communications devices or military equipment.

High-power semiconductors requiring extra-rapid rates of heat removal may require active single-phase liquid cooling. Liquid cold plate components and pumped liquid cooling systems from Aavid Thermacore provide rapid cooling with low fluid flow, and Aavid Thermacore can custom-design solutions for unique application requirements. However, liquid cooling typically occupies more space and requires moving parts like pumps.

Heat pipe-based technology is effective in dispersing heat, even in high-temperature, high-heat flux applications.

Our thermal solutions offer many potential advantages over traditional cooling methods that require devices such as fans or liquid refrigerant. These advantages are especially pronounced in applications for which traditional thermal management has distinct drawbacks.

Meeting Applications Challenges

Limited space: In some applications, the space over an embedded module may be inadequate for installing direct cooling devices. A heat pipe or k-Core® advanced solid conduction can be the ideal solution, efficiently spreading and/or moving the heat to an area where it can be dissipated by forced or natural convection.

Power consumption limits:
Because fans require electricity, they can limit the useful operating time of some portable devices by drawing on battery power. Heat pipe-based solutions require no electricity or rotating machinery, and allow the designer to acquire additional surface area for heat rejection by natural convection. Even where volume constraints make natural convection suboptimal, routing a heat pipe to a heat sink or miniature fan can still save considerable energy and cost.

Zero-noise or low-noise requirements:
Thermal solutions such as heat pipe assemblies, heat sinks  and liquid cooling systems allow heat to be efficiently moved and spread out which can reduce forced airflow requirements. Reduced airflow requirements result in the need for smaller, lower operating voltage fans that produce significantly less noise.

Maintenance constraints: All electromechanical devices such as fans must be maintained and, eventually, replaced. A heat pipe thermal solution has no moving parts to fail, which reduces maintenance requirements, parts inventory and upkeep costs. Aavid Thermacore thermal solutions are often used in applications where maintenance of traditional cooling systems would be difficult or impossible, such as satellite thermal control and communications system cooling in remote locations. Thermal solutions also help extend the life of electronic equipment in rugged military system cooling applications.

Sealed enclosures:
In applications such as power electronics or industrial system cooling, the electronic systems are in a sealed enclosure. A heat pipe provides a thermal path to the outside of the enclosure wall where the heat can be rejected. Aavid Thermacore heat pipes are incorporated in many sealed enclosure cooling installations.

Multiple heat source cooling needs:
In applications such as aerospace and avionics cooling, components requiring thermal management are usually distributed throughout the aircraft or spacecraft. Heat pipes and loop heat pipes offer efficient, cost-effective solutions that don’t require fans and coolant at multiple locations.

Sustainability needs:
Heat pipe-based technology reduces energy use, can reduce or eliminate chemicals such as lubricants and minimizes fan noise. Aavid Thermacore cooling solutions are also often used in waste heat recovery applications.
