Enabling Thermal Technologies Since 1970

Forty-five years ago, thermal technology entered a new era, as Thermacore turned a then-experimental technology into a viable choice for engineers and designers. Today, thanks to the groundbreaking work and engineering expertise of Thermacore since 1970, highly engineered passive thermal management systems are extending the capabilities of technologies in a complete range of areas: Military, Aerospace, Computers, Communications, Energy Conversion, Medical and Test Equipment, Transportation, Government/Education and more.

In late 2016 Aavid Corporation acquired Thermacore creating the subsidiary Aavid Thermacore.  Aavid's 50 years of engineering experience and global manufacturing capabilities will enable Aavid Thermacore to further push the boundaries of highly-engineered thermal management systems.  We now bring unparalleled engineering design expertise and thermal solution performance, quality and reliability to markets where tomorrow's challenges await.

Aavid Thermacore currently retains 180 employees at 5 facilities located in the United States (Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Ronkonkoma (Long Island), New York) and the United Kingdom (Ashington, Northumberland). All facilities are ISO 9001 certified, with AS 9100 certifications in the Pennsylvania and New York facilities. We’re ready to play a leading role for another 45+ years of thermal management technology, a technology we helped bring to life.

1970s

  • Thermacore was founded in 1970 to pursue the development and commercialization of heat pipe technology.
  • Early R&D focused on supporting initiatives of the U.S. Department of Energy, Department of Defense and NASA.

1980s

  • Expanded into aerospace industry with acquisition of Dynatherm. Aluminum axial-grooved ammonia heat pipe products enhanced and standardized into a reliable product.
  • From 1983 to 2000, Thermacore received more than $10 million in contracts under the Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program.
  • SBIR funding was used to develop the “wick structure” — a fundamental component of the heat pipe.
  • Sintered powder wick structure technology developed.
  • Applied heat pipe technology to niche applications, such as military avionics, radios, transmitters, TWTs, copy machine rollers, bar code readers and power electronics.

1990s

  • Licensed technology to design, develop and manufacture a new product: Loop Heat Pipes (LHP).
  • Worked with Intel to develop an application guideline for cooling microprocessors. Intel recognizes heat pipe as an enabling technology for higher performance microprocessors.
  • In 1994, developed heat pipe application guide for Intel’s Pentium chip.
  • 1996 - Thermacore wins Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Technology of the Year Award in the Computer/Electronics Category for innovation in cooling computers
  • From 1996 to 1998, Thermacore improved its manufacturing processes associated with heat pipes in order to reduce the unit cost and efficiently mass produce.
  • Thermacore Europe established in 1998 upon acquisition of Isoterix Limited — a United Kingdom-based thermal management solutions provider.
  • Thermacore establishes Thermacore Korea and Thermacore Taiwan.
  • In 1999, Thermacore expands production capabilities with a service agreement with third party for a manufacturing facility in Mexico.

2000 – May 2008 (wholly-owned subsidiary)

  • April 2001: Thermacore is sold to Modine Manufacturing Company (MOD).
  • From 2001 to 2007, Thermacore is operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary — the Electronics Cooling Division of Modine Manufacturing Company.
  • Thermacore has the largest collection of heat pipes, vapor chambers and loop heat pipes in the broadest collection of material/working fluid combinations on continuous life and reliability testing.
  • Thermacore is producing in excess of 200,000 heat pipes per day from its Taiwan facility.
  • The sintered wick heat pipe has become the world standard for electronics cooling thermal management products.
  • Heat pipes manufactured by Thermacore are produced in the millions per day and can be found in virtually every laptop, desktop and server in the world.

May 2008 - Present (Independent and Entrepreneurial Again!)

  • May 2008: Thermacore management successfully acquires Thermacore from Modine Manufacturing Company, returning to its independent and entrepreneurial roots.
  • Thermacore refocuses business back to markets that value its recognized thermal technology leadership.
  • Awarded a $9.5 million contract by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the development of Micro-technologies for Air-Cooled Exchangers (MACE) to improve the thermal performance of military electronic systems such as telecommunications, active sensing and imaging, radar, and other platforms.
  • Thermacore Maintains Commitment to Quality and the Military/Aerospace Market with AS9100 Certification.
  • August 2009: Thermacore acquires k Technology, a business headquartered in Langhorne, PA, that designs and manufactures custom thermal management products for power electronics cooling.
  • January 2010: Thermacore reaches 40th Anniversary Milestone
  • May 2010: Thermacore acquires Pittsburgh Materials Technology, a business headquarted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that specializes in and has earned a reputation for expertise in complex material joining, refractory metal alloy development and characterization, mechanical testing to 2000°C (3,600°F) and above, and most recently, cryomilling of aluminum to achieve dramatically higher material strengths.

Late 2016 - Present (Aavid Thermacore)

  • 2016: Thermacore and Thermacore Europe are acquired by Aavid Corporation and become Aavid Thermacore.  Aavid design and manufacturing capabilities and global presence augment the Thermacore vision of innovation and optimization.
